Any opinions on the Andrew Luck lottery?  Personally, I'm interested to see what the Colts do.  If they keep up this pace they'll get the first pick...do they spend it on Luck when they know they'll have a healthy Peyton Manning back for next season?  Or could Manning tutor Luck?  I'm interested to see how this plays out.

You generally don't draft a QB with the next season in mind, so I don't see why they wouldn't take him. Even if Manning gets 2-4 good years in, that would probably be a great learning experience for Luck. Just look at what Brett Favre did for Rodgers.

And Favre did that reluctantly.

Yeah, the unargueable best college guy from a year or two back being tutored by today's best (or second best if you like Brady better, but whatever).

Why do you hate him? He was one of my favorite players when he played for the Twins; great fielder.

I hate the Phillies. Basically the Yankees of the NL right now. Was very pleased when they lost.

Re: Sports Discussion Thread

People say a team is the "Yankees" of their division or league whenever they do super well and/or have a high payroll. I don't think that's what makes the Yankees so hate-able at all and it pisses me off when people make those kinds of remarks. The Phillies ARE NOT like the Yankees as a club. Sure, they won 102 wins and they have the highest payroll in the National League. They're going through the hottest few years in franchise history, yes. But that should NOT equate them to a team who has effectively monopolized the playoffs in baseball history for years on end through money. That should NOT equate them to a team whose fan base is the least loyal in the majors, whose fans cheer for steroid-using fools and socially bully the rest of baseball for not winning as consistently as they do. The Phillies have been successful these past few years. They're not the Yankees.

Re: Sports Discussion Thread

I never said their fans are like yankee fans, I just compared them because they have a stacked roster. If I'm a neutral fan, I'm almost always going to cheer against the heavy favorites, such as the 2007 New England patriots.

Re: Sports Discussion Thread

Fair enough, but from a historical standpoint it's simply inaccurate to compare the clubs to each other (that includes everything about the franchise... players, fans, money, etc.). If you meant to point out their roster that's what you should have done.

Saying "Yankees" doesn't imply that I'm comparing their histories.

Either way, it's not worth arguing about anymore.

Re: Sports Discussion Thread

I'm torn about who I want to win the World Series.  I don't particularly like either club, but it would be nice to see Michael Young, Josh Hamilton, and Daren Oliver get rings.  At the same time, the Cardinals' run is pretty incredible and it would be cool to see it end in a championship.  I was really hoping for a Tigers-Brewers World Series, but this should at least be a competitive series.

Re: Sports Discussion Thread

Since you didn't specify that you were referring to their roster I thought you were saying what everyone else says (even during years when the Yankees aren't doing so hot)... which is that a team that is successful equates to the Yankees. I see what you meant now, although I still disagree. Even though the Yankees and Phillies were two of the top competitors in baseball this year, I'd say it was Rangers before Yankees from the get-go. In other words, the Yankees were not atop their league in any respect other than record.

Cardinals have better fans, so I want them to win. I also hate every team from Texas, by default.

Does anyone else think it's retarded to have a 5-game divisional series instead of 7?

I think 5-7-7 is alright, but 7-7-7 is fine too. Herman Cain probably wants

9-9-9

Re: Sports Discussion Thread

I'd like to see a 7-7-7 format, but I feel like the postseason drags on for long enough already.  I'd like to see the league cut down the schedule by 10-15 games, so that it's easier to do a 7-7-7, especially if they plan on adding teams to the playoffs.  November baseball is not okay in my book.

Re: Sports Discussion Thread

I agree, Shaft. There's a specific reason the season was extended to 162 games... I think it was to accommodate the new teams entering both leagues or something. Now that they're pretty solid with the organizations (I don't see any new teams being added any time soon) they should definitely lower the amount of games played by 10 to 20 and fix scheduling accordingly. Having a 7-7-7 format for the postseason makes much more sense and that's ultimately the most important part of baseball.

Re: Sports Discussion Thread

The shorter the series, the more emphasis on pitching.

Clarification: I like pitching.

Yeah, and that's not really a good thing. For instance, the Phillies obviously had the best pitching in baseball coming into the postseason, but hitting played a much larger role than most people expected in the divisional series against the Cardinals. Baseball teams like the Phillies that win many games over the course of the regular season are built for longevity––the shorter the series, the easier it is for the opposing team to match ace with ace on short rest. A 5-game series doesn't adequately test how good a team is; it's a better test of how good certain players on that team are.

I'd like to see it for most major sports leagues, really.  82 games is way too much for the NBA or the NHL.  Something about hockey in June makes me cringe inside.

Good game so far. Nice pitcher's dual with great fielding.

Also, Happy Feet 2 looks terrible. I don't know what people saw in the first one.
