Landing Grenades Easily

Well, I've been holding onto a secret for grenade accuracy for some time now, and given that TW3 is coming up and TWO is dying, I may as well share for all those interested. Cobrall showed me this little tactic about 7 months ago, or so, and that's when I realized that very, very little skill is actually needed to succeed in TWO (unfortunately). This is mostly for those of you (most people on TWBoards) who don't play anymore and who might find this interesting in retrospect.

Sadly, Afro set up each map so that a -57 grenade at full power will land at a measurable (not just predictable) distance without fail. Someone inevitably figured this out, and here's how it works:

http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab29/97SNM2010/1-3.png

Step 1: View the stage.
Step 2: Align your player with the third circle from the edge under your health bar.
Step 3: Use a straight edge (or just eyeball it) to follow a horizontal path from the feet of your player to the opposite side of the map, directly under the third circle from the edge on that side of the map. (That intersection is where a -57 grenade will land.)
Step 4: Position your player as needed and, with that knowledge, fire your grenade.

If you're throwing an impact, the ideal method is to get to the exact same horizontal as your opponent and position yourself so that a -57 full power impact will undoubtedly hit your opponent's exact location.

Why is this such a cheat? Well, imagine you're not so perfectly set up, and you're at a totally different height than your opponent. No big deal, just measure it out:

http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab29/97SNM2010/measurenade.png

The point is, you can graph where your grenade will land because Afro happened to set grenades up so mathematically. This is the most basic relationship you need in order to map out your grenades, but there are more such associations you can make that I won't disclose, because they should be pretty obvious now.

Side note:

The best part about TWO when I was first getting good was learning how to predict where my grenades would land based on repetition and experience. I developed a sort of "feel" for grenades that I could rely on most of the time, without ever being able to calculate my odds before firing. The problem with this new method is that once you know it, it's really hard to stop using it. You begin to map out a sort of approximation for where your grenade will land subconsciously, and it becomes a habit. However, there is no question that relying on "feel" is less reliable (for obvious reasons) in the long run. If I take a 2 month break now, I will be just as consistent with my grenades, with this knowledge, as I was before I stopped.

Anyway, hope I didn't kill the game for you, and if you knew this beforehand I'd be really interested to know, so please say so in the comments.

Now I feel kinda like a cheater even though I always went on feel/repetition on non-auto throws, like my subconscious knew this already or something.

Re: Landing Grenades Easily

That's a pretty cool way of measuring.  I mostly just eyeball the distance but end up missing anyway because I suck ass at hitting full power.

Re: Landing Grenades Easily

I have a similar method, though I don't use it, since it feels really cheap, and it usually takes like 20 seconds for me to line up a shot. Only times I use it is if my opponent is being difficult(camping), and I'm forced to land an impact on a spec or something. I look at it as a secret weapon.

Re: Landing Grenades Easily

I never really throw grenades with strategy. I just go with some random angle and throw it up, then hope it lands on something.

Re: Landing Grenades Easily

Nice! I've always calculated the trail of an impact  by throwing a greeny  to an average angle first... But this could be quite more helpful. smile

Re: Landing Grenades Easily

I honestly don't feel you gave anything away. Im shocked more ppl don't have a similar method.  I try to picture the arc if im not level.  TW3 will be different indeed without angle markers.  A huge improvement imo.  Although I have a feeling we will all be able to memorize with our eye certain angles and thats ok with me.

There is still skill involved as you must figure the arc, hit full, etc.  Closer and mid ranged improvised games are great to me because it takes some of the measuring technique out of the game. Which is why I play a very foward aggressive game....to force ppl to use less than full power.

I agree 100%, the best part about TWO is hitting a beautiful shot purely by feel, and that's usually closer range or involving more complex bounces.
