TW3 skill ranking system

This topic will serve as an overview of the new skill rank system (in beta when 1.04 releases) and a place to ask questions/discuss it

The skill ranking system is a way to measure a player's relative skill against other players by other factors than just wins and xp

As of now the skill rank stat is currently listed in your profiles near the bottom of the gameplay section as 'skill rank (beta)'
(see here http://www.xgenstudios.com/territory-wa … fro.ninja.)

Your skill rank will be tracked and changed during the course of 1.04, and I reserve the right to either reset it or leave it after the beta period. (depending on input from the community of course)

breakdown of the skill rank system

Everyone starts with a 2000 'skill rank'

when you participate in a match, your skill rank is affected based on your opponent's skill ranking.

If two players have skill rankings within 100 points of each other, we can assume that they are evenly matched. for matches like this, 25 points are put on the line.
Player A(2000) vs Player B(2000). Player A wins
result: Player A(2025), Player B(1975)

once we end up outside of the 100 point range, we start looking at 25% of the difference.
Player A(2150) vs Player B(2000)
there is a 150 point difference between the players. a quarter of this is 37.5.
if player B wins (the 'worse' player), he gains 37.5 points, and player A loses 37.5 points
however if player A wins(the 'better' player) he gains an amount of points relative to the difference:
within 150: 20 points
within 200: 10 points
within 400: 5 points
anything else: 1 point
player B would also lose this amount.

lastly, a maximum change in either direction would be capped at 200 points. If a rank 2000 player happens to lose to a rank 100 player, his score shouldn't plummet by 475 points.

benefits of this system: players of similar skill levels are encouraged to play each other.
if a high ranking player noob hunts, he's only going to earn 1-10 points. if he plays someone in his league, he stands to gain 25 points.

Re: TW3 skill ranking system

It's not dissimilar to the rankings used on the Online Mario Kart games except they were more complex because they had larger number of players to calculate (8/12).

I like it.

Re: TW3 skill ranking system

By the way, it would be worthwhile to implement not only the level requirement for rooms, but also the skill rank requirement. I don't want to play a 100-level noob with 1500 skill points.

Re: TW3 skill ranking system

that's the idea assuming the beta system works out well. that's why I'm skipping the idea of specifying a minimum w/l ratio (skill rank is more straightforward)

Re: TW3 skill ranking system

Yeah I think you should reset it back because this happened for wins and losses in the beta too, so just to keep it fair I think.

Set back to 2000 or 1000 because if it starts at 0 and somebody losses they shouldn't stay at 0 or be -25

Re: TW3 skill ranking system

Starting at 0 makes much more sense than starting at 2000 or 1000, in my opinion.

Lets say a noob had 1850 skill points and a pro has 3000 skill points in the beta but the update set it back to 0.
This would happen:
They play each other again but they both have 0 skill points because of the update. The pro obviously wins and gets 25 points.

If noob the used to have 1850 points and the pro used to have  3000 points why should the pro get 25 points for winning?

Re: TW3 skill ranking system

It's based on levels isn't it? For determining the skill points you get, so how will this change anything?

Re: TW3 skill ranking system

skill points actually do start at 0, I just add 2000 for cosmetic effect (no negatives)

everyone will be set back to 0 but you'll see it displayed as 2000

the system is initially 'unfair' because yes, 'pros' will be playing 'noobs'
but that's how the skill rank system balances out. Once the pros play enough noobs the ranks will settle out and become more accurate.

I don't think so!  I thought it had more to do with how many the other player had in relation to your own... is that right?

So.. In setting it back to zero.. that is meaning that zero is the lowest?  Or will one with zero skill go lower if they keep losing? tongue

Re: TW3 skill ranking system

zero is the base value. I just add 2000 so it looks nicer when displayed. It really doesn't matter, it's all about the proportion. The difference between 0 and 1000 and the difference between 1000 and 2000 is still just 1000.

Oh you're right for some reason I always thought it was based on level lol.

Re: TW3 skill ranking system

In the start of our little series, I was 100-66 and my opponent was 270-40. It doesn't make sense to me how I gain 10 points for a win and lose 40 for a loss.
