Re: TW3 skill ranking system

We needed a leaderboard that was based more on skill and less on just wins. But I don't think this is the way to go. If we do keep the system I don't know why it should start at 2000 it seems like a weird number just start at 0

Re: TW3 skill ranking system

I started at 2000 so we wouldn't have a lot of people with negative skill ranks.

how would you change it otherwise?

This system is used around the globe in all possible endeavors; it's called the Elo rating system: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system

After reading that, tw3's ranking system seems relatively similar to the Elo system.

Re: TW3 skill ranking system

Now that I thought about it, I think there should be a limit to the difference after which the player gets zero points for a win. That would keep all the boosters from infinitely pumping their skill rank. I would set that limit to the difference of >500 points.

Match histories already to a lot to deter boosting. Seems like overkill to me.

But they have no effect on the leaderboards.

That seems reasonable. It should also help keep experienced players from dominating new and inexperienced players just to earn skill points.

Really, lower skill rank players should be searching for higher level players to play to maximize the rate at which their rank increases. Instead of removing all incentive for higher level players to accept lower level challenges, let's keep in the '1 point' to benefit everyone at least marginally. You or binky may not be interested in playing against lower skill rank players, but unless they're retarded, they're interested in playing against you.

Boosting for skill rank sounds really stupid and time consuming, even more so than boosting for wins. Even if a booster manages to get on the leaderboards, they still did a lot of work for it. Fools work, but work.

I absolutely don't get your point. People like jardeltdb and Taiwan.Team can boost in-de-fi-nite-ly. And we don't need boosters in top5 (or topAnything for that matter). No one cares how much work they did—it's like defending a corrupted politician who did a lot of work to steal taxpayers' money.

Re: TW3 skill ranking system

once you reach a difference of 400 points, if the winner is the higher ranked player, they only receive 1 skill point. I can cut it to 0 but I didn't want to completely remove incentive for playing other people of different ranks. skill rank can be boosted to an extent but remember the higher a booster goes the harder it is for them to keep going, unless they really want to play their alt account for 1 point at a time. should I remove it?

Re: TW3 skill ranking system

It's only 1 skill point... doesn't concern me either way but I guess you can remove it.

Afro, look at the leaderboards. The top two players there are utter boosters. Once you release your game on Kong (if that happens), new boosters will arrive, and we'll have our top20 consisting exclusively of boosters.

First point: You're blowing the booster problem out of proportion; stop. Boosting is already not that easy with the current setup of skill rank.

Second point: We should be encouraging different people to play. If stopping boosters means it discourages or hinders non-boosters from playing, its not worth it.

Third point: Boosting is going to happen whether you like it or not. We know who the boosters are, and the boosters do too. Even if that corrupt politician is discovered to have conned a lot of people out of their money, and loses his position and reputation, there's always a way for him to claw his way back up to the top. Too much work to just throw away, or something to that effect. If I spent hours of my day boosting to 2500+ skill rank, I don't think I'd just throw in the towel when things got harder.

@afro how do player specific badges work? Would it be possible to have a hidden badge specifically for boosters?

That's a dangerous game to start playing. Bottom line is you want people to play the game, like you said. With that business plan in mind the last thing you want to do is stamp a scarlet letter on someone.

Why can't the community itself police the boosters? Why should the game or the creator take responsibility for it? Afro (and us as fans who want new content) needs people to play the game, and these kids are playing. Are they playing right? Well that's up for the people to decide. What do they lose by doing it? What do they gain? If their name gets taken off some unofficial community list, that's up to them to decide if that is a punishment or not and if the risk is worth it.
