Re: Post your projects

Yes, I'll apply the decal, blow dry it to get it nice and warm so it sticks well. Then I'll apply the first coat of poly and wait for it to dry. I've got a 320 sandpaper to rub it down, and I'll probably repeat that process 2 more times. Hopefully I don't fuck this up.

My friend who helped me put the boards together is applying his poly coats today, here's his progress so far:

Those came out really well. I know you said you still don't know exactly what you want to do for a career, but if nothing else, you can always fall back on your creative stuff like this/the emulator/every other cool thing you've told us about.

All done!

Now I gotta make some bags with brains and hearts on them.

To recap:
$40 for the wood
$55 for the vinyl
$8 for two cans or spray paint
FREE - screws, tools, and various things my friend already had
---------------------
Total - Around $110 (I'm rounding up for any small things I bought but missed, but can't be sure)

Definitely worth making your own considering I've seen them go for $185-200.

Re: Post your projects

How much would you charge for shipping? ^_^ jk I have enough sets already. But seriously, nice work. For the bags I suggest the kind with real corn/beans.  They can't be left in rain but they're not flimsy once you break them in and the material is thicker and more durable.

Re: Post your projects

I made a post earlier in this thread earlier about minecraft; I am making two personal texture packs at the moment. One of which I can't show you. The other one is gang themed and all the monsters are supposed to be snakes. So, I was wondering what I should go with for zombies and zombie pigmen.

-Generic 'tough-guy' Snakes
Pros:
Makes more sense as a ubiquitous hostile mob
Makes more sense as someone that melees you to death.
Cons:
I have to make them from the ground up(2-3 hours in addition to whatever other stuff I'm changing)
Wouldn't make sense for them to incorporate Villagers(rodents) into their ranks instead of killing them.

Work to do if i go this way:
Finish Zombie texture
Redo Pigman texture
Lengthen the head on the already finished Zombie texture

-Snake Ho's
Pros:
More interesting
Drops panties
Finished
-Cons:
Doesn't make a lot of sense to have them attack you all the time
Harder to kill than skeletons

Work to do if I stay with this:
Improve the Pigman texture(they don't look enough like pimps)
Make a base model for villagers and put the prostitute clothes on it.(probably going to use the same base for every villager so that means a lot less work down the road.)

Re: Post your projects

Usually the way it works is generic strong guy, generic skinny guy, and then generic medium sized guy. How you define them is what will give them their own personalities. You could have generic guy with knives, or generic guy with a bat, sometimes what they carry is what gives them their personality.

-----

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone. Twin, you could totally do this, it's actually not that hard. Instructions online are real easy to follow, and it's 3 pieces of wood. All you gotta do is find tools. The place I got the decals done were real cheap, you could do full size or smaller, he does it all. I could even help you design something. Installing the decals was super easy, but I've worked with 3m vinyl at work so I was confident. I could walk you through it, it's all easy if you break it down into steps.

My friend had an older, bootleg version of this when we tried making our RPG, Apostolic Journey.

So far I'm planning for a lighthearted RPG that makes fun of how serious an RPG can be, similar to Earthbound in that sense.

I'm expending an uncharacteristic amount of effort on it, however, as its going to be twice as long as I planned it to be, I am wondering how to work out the presentation.

I explain my issues further down in the post, but for people who don't care to read everything, here are two simple polls.

1. Some action scenes can be made into gifs if I put the work in; should I do that? (y/n)

2. The comic is long and I don't want to draw too much on your attention spans; Should I upload it in parts? (y/n)

1st presentation concern: Action scenes take up a lot of time and panels. They are also feature fairly sparse dialogue. I make everything in paint, so I can simulate animation by clicking through the relevant panels quickly. I'm not sure that's sufficient for the boards, and some panels only make sense if you seem them mid-animation.

Solution: I can make some animated scenes into gifs.

Pros:
-Would really take a hunk out of the overall number of panels(easier to read all in one go)
-Less panels look accidentally dumb(to be clear, most of the shittier panels are the ones I didn't care enough to make look better)
-Animated action scenes are cooler

Cons:
-Making a gif takes a lot of time, increasing with the number of frames.(I already spend a lot of time on panel-by-panel pseudo animations, so that time would pretty much get doubled by making them into gifs)
-If there's dialogue that should be present in the animation, I need to spend a lot of time making that look cool.(the draw of the comics may be that they are shitty, but shitty animation is much more unpleasant to see.)
-They might be bad anyway, which would mean I spent a lot of extra time for no good reason (Drawing action scenes is fun, so I may be biased as to how fun they are to watch)

2nd presentation concern: As I have mentioned, the comic is long, and it will probably be easy to lose interest halfway through. I will definitely do some sort of 'scene selection' a the top of the post, and the slow-mo style action scenes will probably have 'skip' options in the beginning for people that are more interested in plot(lol) or humor.

Solution: I can break up the posts such that only one or two sections of the comic come out on a given day, rather than all of them at once

Pros:
-Would allow me to properly build suspense between parts(It takes a lot of time to make a group of panels than it does to read, especially if people like mike or sulli are in them; cliff hangers at the ends of parts probably feel more impactful for me than they do for you.)
-I won't hit my upload limit and have to cut things short in the middle of the post (I use tumblr to host everything, and it has a set number of posts you can make on a given day. I will definitely begin uploading the comic today, posting it is what I am debating)
-Skips and linking would be way easier to set up.

Cons:
-I am well aware that staggering the comic is what allows it to be(at least a little) funny when it comes out. Chopping it into blocks may be futile.
-I would have to make sure I didn't get ninja'd in between posts(each part is a comic in of itself, and you shouldn't have to scroll through all of them to make sure you don't miss any comments in between.)

You can look at my other post about this which is a little further up the page if you want to check on my progress in terms of parts.

Re: Post your projects

Adding animation would be awesome, but like you said, time consuming.

Have you considered doing a frame or two a week? This would keep the flow steady, it would give you time to work on animation because you would know you only have one frame to deal with, and it would keep people's attention span sharp because they would be anticipating an update on a regular basis.

My only suggestion if you did it that way is that you try to have some sort of punchline or joke in every post, so that while the overall story is incomplete, the week's update feels like it had it's own conclusion.

I also can't remember where you post the comics, you should start your own topic and put them there, it's an ongoing thing and deserves to have it's own title. What you could do to avoid getting ninja'ed is start the topic, then post in the first 10 or however many you feel you need to reserve them for yourself, that way you can edit every week. You could separate each post by issue, or by month, or just until the post won't hold anymore, I don't know.

*Edit*

Nevermind, you did start your own topic. I think you should continue there, and reserve the first few posts for every 'issue', then edit them as you update. That way all comments on the issue appear after the entire thing, and it avoids being broken up.

*Edit Part 2*

Another reason this method might work is you already have an entire issue created, so you're already ahead of schedule. You could post 1 or 2 pages, and during that time work one 1 or 2 more, and always have a fall back grace period.

If you ever needed help, like with making gifs or something, I could help. I could photoshop the pics or whatever you asked, no big deal.

The link was under the last page of the comic. I am indeed parodying the Transformers Movie, because if Goomy is going to name himself after Galvatron, he's practically begging me to reference their first fight against each other.
